Flamenco Dance at SVCC Festival- April 4, 2003
A highlight of the Festival of the Arts -SPOTLIGHT ON SP AIN
AND
LATIN AMERICA! will be performances by the famed dance ensemble Flamenco
Vivo - Carlota Santana! Sponsored by Southwest Virginia Community
College, an evening performance will be on Friday, April 4 at 7:30 p.m. in
the SVCC Community Center. A student lecture/demonstration performance
will be Friday at 11:00 a.m. The ensemble will also perform
on Saturday, April 5 at 10:00 a.m. for the Art is Fun Day at SVCC. A
Flamenco Dance workshop will be held at 11:00 a.m. April 5 at SVCC. The
fee for the workshop is $5.
Flamenco is a multicultural art form. Originally from Andalusia
in the southern region of Spain, it developed from the interaction of
the many cultures that inhabited that region for centuries. The Moorish,
Jewish and Gypsy cultures are integrated in this diverse art form as
well as rhythms from Africa and South America. Flamenco is considered
worldwide to be one of the richest expressions of folklore.
There will be five dancers and two musicians in the SVCC performance.
They will perform the following dances: Aires Del Sur, Alegrias, Soleares,
Luz y Sombra, Seguiriya, Solea por Bulerias, Sevillans, Farruca and Fin de
Fiesta. The meaning of each dance will be described before the dancers
perform.
Carlota Santana, Artistic Director and Founder, has been
designated “The Keeper of Flamenco” by Dance Magazine in recognition of
her commitment to creating new works and developing young artists and
choreographers. Her mission is to build bridges between cultures using the
universal spirit of Flamenco. Ms. Santana is on the faculty of Duke
University but also teaches in New York and Long Island Universities.
Under her direction, the company has performed in many prestigious
performance spaces and at major festivals.
Flamenco Vivo-Carlota Santana! is sponsored by the Mary D. B. T.
Seamans Foundation, Randy and Julie Forehand. Patrons are: Bill and Mary

Richlands.
