A participant in the 18th annual
SWCC Scholarship Golf Classic may be the winner of a 2009 Dodge
Caliber courtesy of Ramey Tazewell. The winner must have a
Hole-in-One on Hole Number three (3) at the Tazewell County Country
Club during the tournament on September 24th, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Rick Jackson, general manager and Larry Turner, sales manager of
Ramey Tazewell admire the Grand Prize with Mary W. Lawson, executive
director of the SWCC Educational Foundation and Dr. J. Mark Estepp,
president of SWCC. Proceeds go to the scholarship program at
SWCC, where many students qualify for financial aid. For sponsorship

Jimmy W. Welch (far right), Executive Director
of the Credit Bureau of the Virginias Foundation, Inc., presents Dr. J.
Mark Estepp, SWCC President, with a gift for scholarship assistance. The
Credit Bureau of the Virginias Foundation Scholarship program grants four
$1000 scholarships annually to students from the southwest Virginia/southern
West Virginia counties bordering the Bluefield area.
Students receiving the scholarships for 2009-2010 are: Leanna Mullins, Jolo, WV; Jackson Martin, Bluefield, VA; Stephanie Owens, Pounding Mill, VA; and Teresa Bothwell, Richlands, VA. Southwest welcomes Chad Vandyke of Raven and Kristy Fuller of Swords
Creek to its Virtual Advisor Team. These advisors assist students
with questions online by utilizing an instant messenger program. “I
enjoy assisting SWCC’s students with their questions,” commented
Vandyke. Fuller said, “I am more than happy to help any new and
existing students.”
SWCC’s Online Advising is available Monday through Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Thursday from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., offline Friday and available Saturday through Sunday from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. SWCC’s Online Advisor is funded through the Title III: Strengthening Institutions Grant. |

The Southwest Virginia Community College Cooperative Radiography Program
recently celebrated its 32nd Radiography Pinning Ceremony at the Virginia
Highlands Community College-Higher Education Center, Abingdon, Virginia. These graduates represent students from the Southwest
Virginia Community College, Virginia Highlands Community College and
Wytheville Community College campuses. Graduates for the Class of 2009
received their pins from program faculty, representing each campus.

| PBL National Winners |
PBL students recently attended the National Leadership Conference held in
Anaheim, California. SWCC students brought home 5 national awards, which was
the record number for any of the chapters from Virginia. Students from four-
year universities and two-year colleges representing the USA, the Bahamas,
Bermuda, DoDDS Europe, Grand Cayman Islands and the Virgin Islands competed for
the national awards.

| Keynote Speaker |
Ann B. Ross of Asheville, North Carolina, noted author of the popular Miss
Julia fiction series, will be keynote speaker for the Appalachian Heritage
Writers Symposium to be held Friday and Saturday, June 12 and 13 at SWCC.

| PBL Leadership Winners | The SWCC chapter of Phi Beta Lambda attended the 2009 Phi Beta Lambda State Leadership Conference in Richmond, Virginia. Members competed in various competitions and ten students brought home 16 prestigious awards, despite facing tough competition. Eight students qualified to compete in 11 events at national competition in Anaheim, California, June 19-23, 2009. form of American music, Jazz.

Quintango will perform during this year’s Festival of the Arts: A
Retrospective – 1995-2009. The Festival will recapture some of the best and most
memorable performances during the years since 1995. From April 16 through 26,
the festival will celebrate not only its fifteenth anniversary but others as
well.
The 2009 Festival is the tenth anniversary of participation by the chamber ensemble Camerata Virtuosi New York. It is also the 200th anniversary of the birth of Felix Mendelssohn and the 200th anniversary of the death of Franz Joseph “Papa” Haydn. More... |

Robert Tomlinson, meet director. Members of the SWCC faculty and staff served as judges for the meet. Participating high schools were Council, Haysi, Honaker, and Twin Valley. | Appalachian Blanket Circle |
The Appalachian School of Law, in collaboration with the Appalachian Arts Center and SWCC, began a community service project to create blankets for children in the CASA program. Through this project, law students, faculty, staff, and community volunteers have learned to knit, crochet, and put their skills to use in creating individual squares, which are then joined into blankets. A sampling of the blankets will be on display at the Booth Center Gallery February 3 through March 1. learn more >> |

Southwest students were recently accepted into the region’s pharmacy schools. Each of these individuals completed the science courses at SWCC necessary to pursue their goal as a pharmacy professional. | LRC Construction | The Learning Resources Center (LRC) is currently under construction on Southwest's campus. The facility is made possible as a result of the passage of a 2002 general obligation bond package. The LRC will house a state-of-the-art library, distance learning center, learning assistance center, and space for Old Dominion University’s distance education program. The LRC will be named the Earl E. and Dorothy J. Dellinger Learning Resources Center, for the Dellinger’s long time support of SWCC. The LRC construction is visible from U.S. Route 19.
