Golf Classic
A participant in the 18th annual SWCC Scholarship Golf Classic may be the winner of a 2009 Dodge Caliber courtesy of Ramey Tazewell. The winner must have a Hole-in-One on Hole Number three (3) at the Tazewell County Country Club during the tournament on September 24th, beginning at 1:00 p.m.  Rick Jackson, general manager and Larry Turner, sales manager of Ramey Tazewell admire the Grand Prize with Mary W. Lawson, executive director of the SWCC Educational Foundation and Dr. J. Mark Estepp, president of SWCC.  Proceeds go to the scholarship program at SWCC, where many students qualify for financial aid. For sponsorship and registration information call 276.964.7348.

Scholarship Jimmy W. Welch (far right), Executive Director of the Credit Bureau of the Virginias Foundation, Inc., presents Dr. J. Mark Estepp, SWCC President, with a gift for scholarship assistance. The Credit Bureau of the Virginias Foundation Scholarship program grants four $1000 scholarships annually to students from the southwest Virginia/southern West Virginia counties bordering the Bluefield area. 

Students receiving the scholarships for 2009-2010 are: Leanna Mullins, Jolo, WV; Jackson Martin, Bluefield, VA; Stephanie Owens, Pounding Mill, VA; and Teresa Bothwell, Richlands, VA. Online Help Available Southwest welcomes Chad Vandyke of Raven and Kristy Fuller of Swords Creek to its Virtual Advisor Team. These advisors assist students with questions online by utilizing an instant messenger program. “I enjoy assisting SWCC’s students with their questions,” commented Vandyke. Fuller said, “I am more than happy to help any new and existing students.”

SWCC’s Online Advising is available Monday through Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Thursday from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., offline Friday and available Saturday through Sunday from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. SWCC’s Online Advisor is funded through the Title III: Strengthening Institutions Grant.

Radiography The Southwest Virginia Community College Cooperative Radiography Program recently celebrated its 32nd Radiography Pinning Ceremony at the Virginia Highlands Community College-Higher Education Center, Abingdon, Virginia. These graduates represent students from the Southwest Virginia Community College, Virginia Highlands Community College and Wytheville Community College campuses. PBL National Winners PBL students recently attended the National Leadership Conference held in Anaheim, California. SWCC students brought home 5 national awards, which was the record number for any of the chapters from Virginia. Students from four- year universities and two-year colleges representing the USA, the Bahamas, Bermuda, DoDDS Europe, Grand Cayman Islands and the Virgin Islands competed for the national awards.

Keynote Speaker Ann B. Ross of Asheville, North Carolina, noted author of the popular Miss Julia fiction series, will be keynote speaker for the Appalachian Heritage Writers Symposium to be held Friday and Saturday, June 12 and 13 at SWCC. 

The event will culminate with Saturday’s luncheon and Ross’s keynote address followed by the presentation of writing contest awards.  More information is available at http://appheritagewritersym.wordpress.com

PBL Leadership Winners The SWCC chapter of Phi Beta Lambda attended the 2009 Phi Beta Lambda State Leadership Conference in Richmond, Virginia. Members competed in various competitions and ten students brought home 16 prestigious awards, despite facing tough competition.   Eight students qualified to compete in 11 events at national competition in Anaheim, California, June 19-23, 2009. Jazz Concert The Festival of the Arts: A Retrospective –1995-2009, will begin with the truest form of American music, Jazz.

The Festival Fanfare!: Jazz – America’s Music will feature The SWCC Jazz Combo and Ensemble, Dr. Joseph Trivette (pictured), director and professional jazz trumpeter, Rich Willey.

Quintango Quintango will perform during this year’s Festival of the Arts: A Retrospective – 1995-2009. The Festival will recapture some of the best and most memorable performances during the years since 1995. From April 16 through 26, the festival will celebrate not only its fifteenth anniversary but others as well.

The 2009 Festival is the tenth anniversary of participation by the chamber ensemble Camerata Virtuosi New York. It is also the 200th anniversary of the birth of Felix Mendelssohn and the 200th anniversary of the death of Franz Joseph “Papa” Haydn.  More...

Student Winners The Black Diamond District Forensics Meet, sponsored by the Virginia High School League, was held Tuesday, February 17, at SWCC under the direction of Dr. Robert Tomlinson, meet director.

Members of the SWCC faculty and staff served as judges for the meet. Participating high schools were Council, Haysi, Honaker, and Twin Valley.

Team Champion of the meet was Haysi High School.

SWCC faculty and staff involved in implementing the new Department of Education Strengthening Institutions Program recently held a meeting to brainstorm ideas for increasing student engagement and success.

Phyllis Roberts, vice president of institutional advancement, is project director of the $1,794,000 grant.

MAD Camp The MAD Exploration Camp director is Wrenda Fuller of Lebanon. Joey Bland and Tara DeFrancisco, members of the Second City Stage in Chicago, will be returning as theater workshop leaders.

Beth McCoy, founder and director of the East Tennessee Children’s Choir, will be the workshop leader for music.

Abby Bland, recently artistic director for several theater productions in New York and Richmond, will be the art workshop teacher. Applications  will be available by the first of April. more>>>

Appalachian Arts Center

The SWCC Appalachian Arts Center now features the work of 146 local and regional artisans. Several of these artisans are participating in a sale at the Appalachian Arts Center February 3 through 14. All sale items have been discounted between 10% and 50% from the original price.

To formally celebrate the Appalachian Arts Center’s third anniversary there will be a reception on Friday, February 20, from 4:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Appalachian Blanket Circle

The Appalachian School of Law, in collaboration with the Appalachian Arts Center and SWCC, began a community service project to create blankets for children in the CASA program.

Through this project, law students, faculty, staff, and community volunteers have learned to knit, crochet, and put their skills to use in creating individual squares, which are then joined into blankets.

A sampling of the blankets will be on display at the Booth Center Gallery February 3 through March 1. learn more >>

Science Students in Pre-Pharmacy

Southwest students were recently accepted into the region’s pharmacy schools. Each of these individuals completed the science courses at SWCC necessary to pursue their goal as a pharmacy professional. All of the pictured individuals, except Frankie Rose (2nd row, 2nd from right), are currently enrolled at the University of Appalachia College of Pharmacy, Grundy, VA. Rose is now enrolled at the East Tennessee State University Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy, Johnson City, TN.

LRC Construction The Learning Resources Center (LRC) is currently under construction on Southwest's campus. The facility is made possible as a result of the passage of a 2002 general obligation bond package. The LRC will house a state-of-the-art library, distance learning center, learning assistance center, and space for Old Dominion University’s distance education program. The LRC will be named the Earl E. and Dorothy J. Dellinger Learning Resources Center, for the Dellinger’s long time support of SWCC. The LRC construction is visible from U.S. Route 19. An open house will be scheduled when the construction process is completed. more>>>
