An Open House was held Sunday, December 10, at Southwest Virginia Community College to celebrate Dr. Charles King's 40 years of service as president of SwVCC and as a community leader. The reception held at the SwVCC King Community Center drew a number of individuals who wanted to express their appreciation to Dr. King and his wife, Mary. SwVCC Study Tour

VAPTKPictured are some of the students of the group of 25 from Southwest Virginia Community College who participated in the recent SwVCC Study Tour to Presidents’ Homes, led by faculty members Margaret James, Brian Wright, Ellen Elmes, and Brady Surles. The students are pictured at the Presidential Library and Museum of President Woodrow Wilson. The group also toured the homes of Presidents Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe. In addition to these tours to the homes of presidents, the group visited Lexington to see the burial site of Robert E. Lee and the George Marshall Museum, the University of Virginia, and the Museum of Frontier Culture in Staunton. The tour was sponsored by three groups at the college: Phi Theta Kappa, the Art Club, and the General Studies Learning Community.


Interim President Named for Southwest Virginia Community College


Southwest’s own Dr. Bob Sutherland is shown signing his new book Shortcuts to Happiness for (l to r, standing) Dr. Michael Henry, Dr. Susie Mullins, Mary Margaret Thompson, Francis Lowdermilk and Rowena Winfrey. The book is a step-by-step owners manual that provides simple but proven steps to reach the most sought after prize in life . . .individual happiness. The content of the book is the direct result of a special class that Dr. Sutherland and Frank Horton teach each semester for SwVCC students and community members. The college bookstore, as part of its annual open house, held a book signing for Dr. Sutherland and the event was so popular that they ran out of his books! Respiratory Care Student Receives Honor

Tim Whited, Journeyman of the Class of 2007 of the Respiratory Care Program was selected by The International Scholar Laureate Program Delegation on Medicine. He has been asked to travel with specialized medical teams and future medical professionals to Australia, India, China, and South Africa during the summer of 2007. Scholars will have the privilege of studying and learning from distinguished medical leaders, physicians, and researchers at top hospitals and universities. The “Veterans All” Veterans Breakfast 2006 was held at the Gene T. Dye Armory on Southwest’s campus to honor the men and women who have served and are serving our country. Pictured is Jim Boyd, director of the SwVCC Small Business Development Center, presenting the Small Business Veteran of the Year Award to Harold Fuller and his brother, Roger Fuller (not pictured). The event brought together a large crowd of individuals who know first hand the sacrifice involved in this ultimate service to country. The Honorable Phillip P. Puckett, Virginia State Senator, was the keynote speaker. Dan L. Adams, (center) manager of community affairs, Appalachian Power Company, presents Dr. Charles R. King, president of Southwest Virginia Community College, a gift for the SwVCC Educational Foundation, Inc. as a tournament sponsor for the 2006 SwVCC Scholarship Golf Classic. The proceeds of over $25,000 from this year’s tournament will be designated for the Dr. Charles R. and Mary L. King Endowment for scholarships, in appreciation of the King’s 40 years of service at SwVCC. Adams affirms “that AEP has a strong belief in the value of education and this is a way in which we can support the communities we serve.” Dr. King (far right) acknowledges that “AEP has been a longtime friend of SwVCC and we appreciate their valuable support in numerous ways.” Mary W. Lawson, Executive Director of the SVCC Educational Foundation, joins in the presentation.


Homecoming ’06 featured a tribute to Dr. Charles R. and Mary L. King. Dr. King, the first, founding, and only president the college has had since its inception in 1967, was honored through song and speech during the night’s event. Dr. King is always quick to point out that his wife, Mary, has been at his side in helping to build the college into the world-class institution of higher learning that it is today. On Friday night SwVCC’s first and founding President Dr. Charles R. King and his wife, Mary L. King, were honored at a tribute.  Dr. and Mrs. King will have served the college and community for forty years, 1967 to 2007, when he retires on January 1.  They will remain active in the community.  A salute to Dr. and Mrs. King, you have been instrumental in molding the college into the vibrant educational institution that it is today! A Verizon grant will assist SwVCC with further development of its ‘Fast Track’ program, which is an intensive accelerated program of computer programming courses designed to prepare individuals for employment with information technology companies such as CGI-AMS that are locating in the region. CGI-AMS is an IT and business services company that recently located in Lebanon. Virginia Mining Institute Scholarship
The Virginia Mining Institute officials recently presented scholarships to two Southwest Virginia Community College students, Michael Kyle Hart and Mason Colley, both of Richlands. Hart is studying science in preparation to become a chiropractor. Colley is in the arts and humanities program studying graphic design. Presenting the gift to SwVCC President Dr. Charles R. King, was Ken Harvey, president of VMI and Ralph “Moon” Mullins, secretary of VMI. "We Remember" Walk
Justin Trout (right) and a friend joined students, faculty, staff, and administrators who participated in the “We Remember” Walk on the campus of Southwest Virginia Community College on Monday, September 11. The campus walk was held to remember the victims of the 9/11 terrorism attacks and the U.S. troops that are serving around the world. During the time of the walk, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, students could view a 9/11 display in the library and a photo exhibit in the cafeteria that featured a list of all those who lost their lives in the attacks. Participants were invited to sign a banner to commemorate the “We Remember” Walk. The event was sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa with support from the Art Department.


King Brought Values, Vision and Vitality to SwVCC

Arthur Miller, the great playwright, wrote, “We go where our vision is.” Forty years ago, Dr. Charles King and his wife Mary packed up their family and came to southwest Virginia to follow his vision of creating a world-class academic institution. Southwest Virginia Community College graduates are shown during the summer graduation ceremony. Dr. Harold VanHook, former dean of instruction at the college, was the commencement speaker. He told graduates that “You need to see your goal in your mind’s eye and then proceed to go after it. Visualize it before you do it.”

SwVCC has announced the Spring 2006 Dean’s and Honor’s Lists. To earn a place on the Dean’s List a student must have completed twelve or more credits and have accumulated a grade point average of 3.2. To earn Honor’s List status, a student must be enrolled for at least six hours and attain a grade point average of at least 3.50. “To earn a place on the Dean’s or Honor’s Lists is to have excelled academically,” said Dr. Charles King, president of SwVCC. “These students are being recognized for their commitment to academic achievement.”

 


250th Birthday of Mozart Celebrated at MAD Camp

The camp is designed to provide fun opportunities for area students to explore aspects of music, art, and drama which are not generally available to elementary-age students in Southwest Virginia.

SwVCC and LMU Reaffirm Articulation

Southwest Virginia Community College and Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) officials have signed a reaffirmation of an articulation agreement, first signed in 1988.  The agreement will allow students who graduate from SwVCC with an Associate of Arts and Sciences or Associate of Applied Science degree, and who have at least a 2.0 grade point average, guaranteed admission to LMU.  In addition, students who graduate from SwVCC with at least a 3.3 grade point average will receive a $5,500 scholarship from LMU to attend the university.  Pictured (left to right, sitting):  Dr. Nancy B. Organ Recital At Southwest Sunday July 16

Marsha at organOn Sunday, July 16, organist Marsha Scheusner will present a concert at Southwest Virginia Community College at 3:00 p.m. in the King Community Center. Scheusner has been the Director of Music/Organist at First Presbyterian Church, Columbia, TN since 1997. While at SwVCC, Scheusner will direct the music classes during the MAD (Music, Art and Drama) Camp July 17-21.

This organ recital is a part of The Betty Patteson Jackson Sacred Concert Series at SwVCC. On October 22, 2006, renowned organ virtuoso, Diane Bish will perform on the Jackson Series, to be joined by the SwVCC Community Chorus, under the direction of Dr. Joseph Trivette. Admission is free to the Scheusner concert with a voluntary donation accepted at the door.

College Offers “Fast Track” Program for Software Development Companies

The CGI-AMS approved “Fast Track” program available through Southwest Virginia Community College offers qualified individuals a speedy route to acquiring the skills needed to become a computer programmer. Scheduled to get under way August 14, the program was developed by Southwest IT Professors, James Dye and Sandy Stephenson, with input from CGI software experts. The 34 week program is designed for individuals possessing a two-year or four-year degree and an interest in entering into the Information Technology field.
“This is a great program for anyone wishing to re-career,” said Dr. Barbara Fuller, dean of the Business Division at Southwest. “The Fast Track program paves the road for a career into computer programming, and is laid out for individuals who have been working in a variety of fields and have completed a degree. Possessing a degree tells us the individual is motivated and focused.” Read more about it...


SwVCC Governor’s School Opening Day Ceremonies, Monday, June 12

Mr.  Aneesh Chopra, Virginia Secretary of Technology, will deliver the keynote address at the “Opening Day Ceremonies” for the Southwest Virginia Community College Governor’s School. As Virginia's fourth Secretary of Technology, Chopra leads the Commonwealth's strategy to effectively leverage technology in government reform, promote Virginia's innovation agenda, and foster technology-related economic development with special emphasis on entrepreneurship.
The SwVCC Governor's School is one of the pioneering Governor’s School efforts in Virginia, having been in existence since 1985.

Rhonda Vincent, Larry Sparks, and Wildfire to Headline SwVCC Music Festival

On Friday, June 9th, Rhonda Vincent is set to perform at the Southwest Virginia Community College (SwVCC) Virginia Mountain Music Festival, on the college’s campus. Larry Sparks, a legendary musician with a national following, is set to take the stage on Saturday, June 10th. Concerts begin at 6:00 PM daily. The unbelievable thing is that admission to the two-days of the Festival is free. In addition to Rhonda Vincent and Larry Sparks, there is a variety of great talent scheduled to perform during the Festival on Friday, June 9th and Saturday, June 10th including Wildfire, Black Diamond, Bluegrass Kinsmen, Mac Puckett, SwVCC Bluegrass Band, VA Bluegrass, and the VW Boys! Ralph B. Davis Family Honored at SwVCC

At a special event held recently to honor the Ralph B. Davis family, Southwest Virginia Community College officials named the building housing its engineering division in honor of Davis, a well loved local businessman and community leader. Ralph Davis is a man who is remembered for helping others and not asking for anything in return. The SwVCC College Board had previously voted to proceed in naming the building the Ralph B. Davis Hall in order to honor the man who was such a vital member of the community.  Shown accepting a plaque in honor of her late husband is Carol Davis (third from left). The annual Business Education contest was held recently at Southwest Virginia Community College. Twelve area high schools from Buchanan, Dickenson, Russell, and Tazewell counties participated in the event. Betty Corte Presented First Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy

Betty Corte, former chair of the Southwest Virginia Community College Board and, with her late husband, Stelio, well-known area philanthropists, was presented one of the first Chancellor's Awards for Leadership in Philanthropy by Chancellor Glenn DuBois of the Virginia Community College System (VCCS). The awards were presented to 23 outstanding community college benefactors – one honoree from each of the system's 23 colleges. The Chancellor's Award for Leadership in Philanthropy is a new program designed to recognize the vital role of community college benefactors. To make a difference in the lives of students, community colleges rely on the support of outstanding board members, volunteers, and benefactors. Above all, these individuals demonstrate a passion for the mission of community colleges—to ensure that deserving people receive the advantage of a college education. Read more about it...


Science Learning Community News


Dr. Fred Alsop, a professor of Biology at East Tennessee State University, whose research focuses on threatened and endangered birds, avian ecology, and ornithology recently gave a speech to students, faculty, staff and community members at Southwest Virginia Community College. He spoke about Birding 101, an introduction to bird watching, with SwVCC’s Science Learning Community.

Revamped Computer Aided Drafting Certificate
Southwest Virginia Community College officials have announced a newly revised certificate program in Computer Aided Drafting set to begin in the fall of 2006. Full-time students will be able to complete the certificate in just two semesters. Part-time students attending evening classes should be able to complete the certificate in four semesters.  A multimedia art exhibit will showcase artwork by Tazewell County Middle and High School students from March 21 to 29 in the Buchanan Hall Gallery, room B130, on the Southwest Virginia Community College campus. While many other college students across the nation spent their spring break partying on beaches, a group of students from Southwest Virginia Community College and Mountain Empire Community College took their much anticipated time off from school and worked as volunteers.

Buchanan County Artists Show Work at SwVCC Appalachian Arts Center

Southwest Virginia Community College recently celebrated the opening of the Appalachian Arts Center. The center, which serves as both an exhibition space and a marketplace for the work of over 50 area artists, is located in the old Archie Helton store on Route 19.
The center will help to promote the arts and crafts industry in southwest Virginia and preserve traditional folkways of Appalachia. Phyllis Street, a quilter from the Big A Mountain section of Buchanan County, feels that the art center is a welcome addition to the community. “I am very much in favor of promoting our Appalachian heritage. I like for people to see the talent and quality of work that we have in this area. I hope that the center will be a draw for tourism in the area.” Read more about it...

Southwest’s Institutional Research Office invited Kevin Lee from Mountain Empire Community College to demonstrate how he uses Structured Query Language (SQL) to get college data more quickly and in different configurations than is available using the traditional Student Information System (SIS) approaches. Lee made his presentations to people from the Admissions, Business, Financial Aid, Distance Learning, Information Services and Institutional Research offices, as well as guests from Virginia Highlands Community College.


SwVCC Works to Provide Training for New Industries

Southwest Virginia Community College is working to provide training for CGI-AMS and Northrop Grumman, the new high-tech companies that have recently decided to locate in Russell County. The classes will be offered on campus and at the SwVCC Lebanon Center.
“Dr. Rachel Fowlkes, executive director of the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center, and officials at SwVCC have worked in close partnership to create courses and curricula that will prepare students for careers in computer-related occupations at these two industries,” said Dr. Charles King, president of SwVCC. Career Coaches will be placed in local high schools to help students define their career aspirations and take advantage of services and other program offerings. The goal of the Career Coach initiative is to increase the number of high school graduates prepared for employment, community college enrollment—especially in career and technical fields, and other career pathways. Southwest Graduate Named TRIO Achiever Award Winner

Southwest’s OTA Director Administers Handwriting Assessment


Southwest Virginia Community College is offering Emergency Medical Technician, First Responder and Refresher classes starting Monday, January 30th at the college.

The classes will meet on Monday and Wednesday nights from 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM. EMT encompasses all aspects of basic care and transport of critically sick and injured persons. First responder covers advanced first aid topics and is less comprehensive than EMT. Both meet OSHA safety requirements for industry, police and fire departments. Only EMT qualifies the student for ambulance work. Persons currently certified as either can attend for recertification. For more information on this class, call Bill Akers at 276.964.7729.

Paramedic Program Offers Real-Life Training


Members of the Southwest Curriculum and Instruction Committee are shown during a work session to determine that the requirements of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools are consistent within the text of the catalog.  The C&I Committee meets during the academic year to discuss issues relating to the development and modification of curricula at the college.

Project ACCESS is available to individuals Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. The Project ACCESS office is located in Russell Hall room 133.

The Licensed Practical Nursing program at Southwest Virginia Community College has allowed Amy Peery (pictured) to work full-time while becoming an LPN. The program offers its classes at night at SwVCC’s Grundy Plaza and the clinical portion of the program on weekends to appeal to working adults that cannot enroll in a daytime program.
