A variety of traditional music classes are offered this spring at Southwest Virginia Community College. If an individual has always wanted to play a traditional instrument like the fiddle, banjo or guitar - or is already proficient on one of these instruments, there is a class to meet that interest. In order to preserve this unique cultural heritage, SwVCC encourages individuals to enroll. The traditional music classes will begin on January 22nd.
The traditional music classes offered this spring at Southwest include: Fiddle, Banjo, Mandolin, Guitar and String Band. Most classes offer both beginner and intermediate sections. Most traditional music classes at Southwest meet in the evenings beginning at 6:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. and two new sections (Beginning Banjo and Beginning Bluegrass-style Guitar) will meet on Wednesdays at 2:00 p.m.
Instructors for the classes include well-known musicians Tony Brown (banjo), Jeff Brown (Beginning Bluegrass-style Guitar), Ebby Jewell (bluegrass fiddle, mandolin, string band), Jonathan Romeo (Old Time Fiddle) and Dale Ellswick (Beginning Banjo).
The cost of a one-credit class is $77.15, the cost of a two-credit class is $154.30 and the cost of a three-credit class is $231.45. Beginning Classical Guitar and Guitar Ensemble classes are offered this spring at Southwest Virginia Community College. The Beginning Classical Guitar class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:10 p.m. to 2:25 p.m. and the Guitar Ensemble meets on Thursdays from 6:00-7:00 p.m. Both classes meet in King Community Center, rm. K180 and begin the week of January 8th.
Guitar playing experience is preferred but not required for the Beginning Classical Guitar class. Guitar playing and music reading experience is required for the Guitar Ensemble class. The Instructor for both classes is Jonathan Romeo, June O. Shott Artist in Residence at SwVCC.
