Southwest Virginia Community College’s Appalachian Arts Center will display “Singular + Plural”, an exhibition of forged ironwork and mixed media sculpture by Marc Maiorana and Robyn Raines from March 2 through April 30. The exhibition will feature independently created works together with collaborative pieces.
Mixed media artist Robyn Raines explores ideas surrounding what it means to be a collector. Referencing the long, rich history of textiles and expanding the notion of the book form, Raines creates structures that capture and remember the small, but often momentous details of daily life. Combining the familiarity of found objects with newer pieces made by hand, her work incorporates a wide variety of materials including paper, fiber, glass and steel. Robyn Raines is a graduate of Moore College of Art in Philadelphia and recently completed the Core Program at Penland School of Crafts.
Designed and rooted in basic blacksmithing procedures, Marc Maiorana emphasizes the material values of iron in simple, refined shapes. Open to metalworking procedures, his work combines traditional ironworking techniques with more modern, industrial methods. This technique produces forged ironwork: (formed under heat and pressure), fabricated ironwork: (cut and welded), or a blend of the two. Marc earned a BFA in Metalsmithing from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and recently completed his term as a resident artist at the Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina.
An opening reception will be held on Friday March 2 from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM. The Appalachian Arts Center is located in the Old Archie Helton Store on Rt 19, 2.7 miles south of Claypool Hill. For more information, please call Sarah Darpli Romeo at 276.596.9188.
