SVCC is offering a unique opportunity for southwest Virginians to experience Brazil. A global education trip is planned for Recife, Brazil, from May 16 through May 27. While in Brazil, participants will be hosted by students or associates with the American Brazil Association (ABA) School, an English language school in Brazil. During the week stay, Dr. John Brenner, professor of Sociology, global education coordinator, and trip coordinator, will have transportation and daily activities planned for the group.
While in Recife, participants will spend time at the ABA school and with their host families. “The great thing about this trip is being able to stay in the homes of ABA students and their families. The key to gaining a better understanding of another culture is staying in someone’s home,” said Brenner.
While in Brazil, participants will have the opportunity to explore Casa De Cultura and Brennand, an institute and creative art site, as well as the open air markets in Olinda. Participants will tour the ancient part of Recife with catamaran rides on the cities waterways. An overnight trip to Portia de Galinhas, the best beach in Brazil, is also planned.
For approximately three years, sociology students have been connecting with students from the ABA school in Brazil via video conferencing, as part of a United States State department initiative. Students talk about contemporary life, school, work, music, movies, sports, and fashion.
The total cost of the trip is approximately $2,400.00. A deposit of $1,700.00 is due on March 27. The cost of the trip includes air transportation, visa to Brazil, bus transportation while in Recife, and one night in a tourist hotel at Porta de Galinhas. Participants will be responsible for enrolling in Humanities 195 (one credit) and the cost of their own meals while in Brazil.
The tour must have a minimum number of participants, otherwise it will be canceled and the deposit refunded. However, once flight arrangements have been made and paid, the money cannot be refunded. At the time the deposit is made and the flight tickets purchased, this price may vary. Participants will be informed of the final amount for the trip, which will need to be submitted by April 11.
The trip is open to members of the community who would like participate. For more information, contact Dr. John Brenner at 276.964.7226 or john.brenner@sw.edu.
