On Friday, April 25, at 7:30 p.m., SCANDANS and Spelmanslag will present a performance of traditional Scandinavian Folk Music and Dance from the countries of Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland. This performance is part of the SPOTLIGHT ON SCANDINAVIA and the White Nights!, the annual Festival of the Arts sponsored by Southwest Virginia Community College. The performance will bring to life a true ethnic snapshot of the featured countries and the rich cultural heritage of Scandinavia through music, dance and colorful traditional costumes. The performance will be in the SVCC King Community Center. There is no charge but a voluntary donation will be accepted at the door.
On Saturday, April 26 at 10:00 a.m., in the King Community Center, these groups will conduct two workshops. The workshop by SCANDANS will be instruction in Scandinavian folk dance. Participants need to be 12 years of age or older and will need to wear smooth soled shoes, not tennis shoes.
The fiddle workshop will be conducted by Spelmanslag. Participants 12 and older need to have a basic knowledge of playing the “fiddle”/violin. At the conclusion of the workshops, both groups will present an informal demonstration.
Both the dance and fiddle workshops are free but advance registration is requested by April 18. Space is limited. Call 276.964.7348 to register for the workshops and for other festival information.
