 Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Luncheon

Southwest Virginia Community College is hosting its annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day luncheon and ceremony on Monday, January 21, in the college’s Community Center at 11:30 a.m.

J. Franklin Long, attorney-at-law, will be the keynote speaker for the event, which honors the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., one of the premier civil rights leaders of the last century. Long, a native of Bluefield, Virginia, received his Juris Doctorate Degree, from West Virginia University. He began his academic career at Southwest Virginia Community College before completing a Bachelor of Science degree from Bluefield State College.

He has received a multitude of accolades and achievements including: Past President and Past Chairperson of the Mountain State Bar Association Board of Directors; Voted as the Most Outstanding Black Attorney in West Virginia; former Chairman and Co-chairman of the Membership Committee for the West Virginia Trial Lawyers Association; Past Chairman of the Minority Caucus; Member of the State Legislative Advisory Committee; Member of the Election Committee of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America; has lectured to lawyers for Continuing Legal Education Seminars in more than ten states, the Bahamas, Puerto Rico and Canada; has personally provided college scholarships for more than 50 high school seniors; has set-up scholarship endowments at West Virginia University College of Law and Bluefield State College; and provides a Freshman Scholarship at Southwest Virginia Community College.

SwVCC’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration is always well attended. The public is invited to take part in this joyous celebration of the great civil rights leader’s life and accomplishments.
