Parents Plan to Attend SWCC’s Family Day
Southwest Virginia Community College will host a Family Day on Saturday, November 21st from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 pm in the King Community Center on campus. Designed for parents of current or future college students, the event will offer insight into the often overwhelming tasks involved in many of the college processes. Event topics include applying for financial aid, dual enrollment, program prerequisites, guaranteed admission and articulation agreements, and applying for available scholarships. Sessions will be conducted by seasoned professionals with expertise in the many facets of college processes. Lunch will be provided and all participants will receive gift bags. Giveaways at the event include a scholarship.
“College enrollment and transfer processes can appear intimidating,” said Amanda Ellis, SWCC counselor and assistant professor. “This can sometimes result in missed opportunities or uninformed choices.”
SWCC’s Family Day event will also offer a Student Track Session addressing career choices and extracurricular activities for current and future students along with the opportunity to interact with a college professor.
“This is another step SWCC is taking to ensure that parents have the best available resources in making some very important choices about their daughter or son’s future,” said Dr. Mark Estepp, President of Southwest Virginia Community College. “Our Family Day will supply parents with the opportunity to acquire the tools needed in making these very important decisions.”
“College is an investment for the future,” said Ellis. “SWCC is offering this as an added bonus for our students, parents and our communities. It doesn’t matter what college they are planning on attending. What matters is that parents know how to help and advise their children in the decision making process that comes with college. The ultimate goal of Family Day is to demystify college enrollment.”
